Hunter's Mark - Chapter 18"It's a good thing you know about Barrford."
Kyril turned in his saddle. She was looking back at the outpost over her horse's tail, at the smoke drifting comfortably out of the chimney, thinking wistfully of the soft bed upstairs and the clean kitchen that would no doubt become a wreck again until Rubins' wife came back.
"Who is Barrford?" he asked. It was just a name to him; a name plucked out of the air, a name she hadn't meant for him to hear the first time she'd said it, standing dripping and furious outside the inn.
She was mad now, too. She put her nose in the air. "The Barrford you mentioned in your letter, of course."
He stopped his horse and turned him, blocking the path so that she had to stop and he could look her in the eye. The gelding's height gave Kyril the illusion that he was a few inches taller than Agathe. "I mean, who is he to you.""

Hunter's Mark - Chapter 17She climbed slowly out of her dreams into a place of blissful softness. How long had it been since she'd slept in a real bed? It seemed like years.
She stretched luxuriously, until her toes popped and the corner of the blanket, stretched to its limit, peeled off the corner of the mattress and rolled back, exposing her ankles to the cold morning air.
She sat up. The windows in this room faced west, the same direction as the entranceway downstairs, so she wouldn't be seeing the sunrise from here, but the tops of the trees were turning pink. The chimney from the kitchen fireplace came up through the southwest corner of this room; she gritted her teeth and threw off the covers, running as lightly as she could to plant her hands on the chimney bricks.
Hot. He was awake, then. She was sure Rubins would not have bothered to start a fire so early in the morning.
