Description

update December 2012: I've been getting comments that Hamachi updated in November and is not working with openCanvas any more. Are you having this problem? Do you know a workaround? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you!

openCanvas 1.1 Networking Tutorial with Hamachi & NSoCS.

:bulletblue: openCanvas 1.1 (or oC 1.1, as it's commonly known) is a free, lightweight, and surprisingly capable little drawing/painting program that can connect to other openCanvas 1.1 programs on other computers so you can draw together.

As an avid fan of network drawing with openCanvas 1.1, I'd like to introduce other oC 1.1 users to two programs that made a BIG difference in the quality of network drawing experience for me: Hamachi and NSoCS.

:bulletblue: Hamachi can eliminate problems with a router/firewall blocking your oC programs from talking to each other. If you network with someone who's using Hamachi, you need to have Hamachi too.

:bulletblue: NSoCS makes it possible for you to network with a friend, save a networking session file, restore it the next day, and continue working on it together. It will also replay a session after a brief disconnect, allowing participants to log back in and pick up where they left off. Very very handy.

Also, with NSoCS, you can network with more than four people (although using Hamachi will limit you to six). Only the network host needs to run NSoCS, then everyone can connect to him/her.

Hamachi and NSoCS can be run at the same time (along with oC 1.1). That's how I usually use them because I often have trouble connecting without Hamachi. However, if you can connect without Hamachi, then you do not need to use Hamachi at all.

As it says in the tutorial, I AM NOT TECH-SAVVY. I don't know anything about firewall/router settings or IP numbers or involved technospeak. Grab your local computer guru if you had technical trouble. I want to help, but chances are I won't be able to.

Personally, I didn't have much trouble getting these three programs up and running together. The hardest part was figuring out NSoCS, and hopefully I've removed that for you by explaining how to use it here.

Feedback is appreciated, and if you find something majorly wrong, I'll fix it. =)

I hope this tutorial will enhance your networking experiences!

Many thanks to my very competent brother for bunny hopping me over the concepts I didn't understand. If you see any clever technical advice in this tutorial, it's all his. All errors and idiocy, on the other hand, are mine.

Please feel free to download, archive, and share. Be careful about following the links if you didn't get this from my personal website or dA account.

And if you ever want to network -- I'm game! :w00t:
